ABOUT US
We are a progressive District situated in an area of magnificent natural beauty. With rolling hills, creeks, and springs, more than 2,000 members call this place home. We are a political subdivision of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate on the Lake Traverse Reservation and located near the original site of the Sisseton Agency.
We are incredibly proud of all we have achieved and continue to develop and improve for the benefit of future generations. Our District and community members work together to create the best conditions and quality of life. We welcome all to join us, whether to live or just pay a visit.
Atop a bluff near Old Agency is the final resting place of Gabriel Renville (April 1825 – August 26, 1892). Also known as Ti Wakan (Sacred Lodge), Renville and other Sisseton and Wahpeton men formed a community at Lake Traverse in 1864.
In 1867, Renville and others signed the Lake Traverse Reservation treaty, formally establishing and federally recognizing a new home for the Sisseton-Wahpeton. In 1884, the Sisseton-Wahpeton chose Renville as chief for life.
